Last year, coaches and brothers Jim (Centerville) and Joe (Chaminade Julienne) Staley came up with an idea during conversations with University of Dayton basketball coach Brian Gregory. Centerville, Marshall and Jefferson each had players on their rosters UD was recruiting and the Staleys thought it would be a good idea to feature them on UD’s home floor.
The Holiday Classic at UD Arena last season was successful enough with the four-team mix that the Staley brothers have returned it for a second season Sunday and Monday with four appealing area basketball matchups. At 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, Centerville and Trotwood-Madison renew their GWOC rivalry. Marshall and Chaminade Julienne have at it at 7:30 p.m.
On Monday, it’s Trotwood vs. CJ at 6 p.m. followed by Centerville vs. Marshall at 7:30 p.m.
Trotwood is No. 1 in the DDN area D-I ratings. In D-II, Marshall is No. 2 and CJ is No. 4. Trotwood takes the place of Jefferson, which is not participating this year.
Tickets for $4 (students) and $6 (non-students) will cover both games on that day, Jim Staley said.
“It was a nice thing last year,” Jim Staley said. “It was a chance for our guys to get on the arena floor against some great competition. Plus, UD has been very nice about making it affordable.”
But, notice that the Staley brothers will not face each other in the four-team event, and that’s by design.
“It just makes Christmas easier,” Jim Staley said.
Falcons rule
Wrestling quiz: Which was the last team to win the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Invitational Tournament other than Graham?
The Falcons will look to keep their streak of five consecutive tourney wins intact during the Dec. 29-30 event at Vandalia Butler High School. Wednesday’s finals are scheduled for 45 minutes after the consolation semifinals.
Last season Graham beat runner-up Clay 397-128. The holiday tourney will draw 48 teams this season.
Answer: Miami East in 2003, a 12-point winner over runner-up Father Ryan.
500 wins for Cavs
It’s 500 wins and counting for Coldwater’s girls basketball program.
The Cavaliers hit the big number with last Saturday’s 45-27 defeat of Van Wert. That pushed Coldwater’s all-time record to 500-255.
The Cavaliers posted 10 seasons of 20-plus wins, including seven straight, from 1987-96.
