Trotwood-Madison visits Beavercreek in a battle of unbeaten Greater Western Ohio Conference football teams tonight. And if it comes down to a kicking game, the Beavers get the edge.
Senior place-kicker and punter Matt Ringle booted field goals of 41, 38 and 37 yards in Creek’s 23-12 win at Carroll last week.
That ties the area record of three in a game, according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association. But Ringle has a ways to go to match Joe Hodapp of Bellbrook. Hodapp accomplished the trifecta three times in his career (2004-06).
Matt Ford of Springboro (1997), Miamisburg’s Jeff Woolf (’91) and Wes Nan of Valley View (’75) also share the area record.
The Rams usually are kicking challenged, but this year freshman Eric Cospy has emerged to provide a mostly consistent boot. T-M won 27-16 last season.
Ground attack: Through two weeks, just three GWOC teams remain undefeated: Beavercreek, Trotwood and Vandalia Butler.
Those three teams also claim the conference’s top three rushing offenses through the first two weeks. Could that be a coincidence, or are we seeing the outline of a theme for this season?
It’s still early and GWOC teams have played opponents with a variety of skill levels. More revealing is when the teams get into conference play and face common opponents. For now, rushing is getting the job done.
Long distance foes: Alter, Wayne and Centerville had to stretch a bit to land Week 3 nonleague games.
Alter (2-0) is at Napoleon (1-1) on the banks of the Maumee River in northeast Ohio (Henry County) in the teams’ first meeting.
Wayne and Centerville are hosting Canadian teams after exhausting efforts to land Ohio opponents. The Warriors have their home opener tonight against Sir Frederick Banting (Ont.). The Elks host Oakridge (Ont.) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Both GWOC rivals should easily post their first wins. Centerville beat Alter in Week 3 last season.
Can’t beat that: Ponitz Tech (2-0) has made an instant winner out of new coach Theo Lemon, the former Central State University coach. The Golden Panthers get the edge again today at Greenon (0-2).
Crusading Bolts: Northmont, also 0-2, dips into the Greater Catholic League against Moeller (2-0) at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be played at Lockland.
