Adreian Payne, the 6-foot-10 Jefferson High School star and Michigan State University recruit, dislocated his right shoulder during a Wednesday, Feb. 17 game against visiting Dunbar that was also the Broncos’ biggest win of the season.

Payne dislocated the shoulder while blocking a shot in the third quarter of what would become a 74-72 Jefferson victory, said Jefferson coach Art Winston.

A trainer popped the shoulder back into place, and Payne’s grandmother took him to the hospital after the game for treatment, Winston said.

“He dove for a ball earlier in the game, and then he blocked the shot and it came out,” Winston said of Payne, who finished with eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks.

Winston said Payne was in high spirits following the injury, which is why he wanted to stay until the end.

“We thought about putting him back in, but the trainers said that wouldn’t be a good idea,” Winston said.

Winston said Payne likely won’t play in Jefferson’s next game on Saturday against Cincinnati Western Hills, and he would know more about the center’s health after his visit to the hospital.

“He was in great spirits,” Winston said. “He was like the rest of us, really getting into the game.”

Dunbar (15-2), the top-ranked Division II team in the state, opened with a 17-4 first-quarter advantage before Jefferson rallied.

Guard Ryan Bass led the Wolverines with 19 points. Deontae Hawkins added 17 points, and Geron Johnson scored 14 for Dunbar.

Cody Latimer, who returned for Jefferson after missing more than a month with an injured toe, and Devin Foster each scored 17 for Jefferson.

“We handled their pressure,” Winston said.

“We had 11 turnovers in the first half, but then we calmed down.”

The Broncos, 13-5 and No. 8 in the state in D-IV, rebounded from consecutive losses to Trotwood-Madison and Woodward to beat the Wolverines for the first time in more than three decades, Winston said.

Both Jefferson and Dunbar are seeded No. 1 in the upcoming sectional.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever beaten them, and this is my 14th season,” Winston said. “Plus, it’s my anniversary, so it’s a great night.”
