Where: Heidkamp Stadium
Notable: Centerville has established itself as the top big-school team in the area heading into the DDN Game of the Week after winning five straight, including an aggressive defensive effort in a 32-0 defeast of Northmont last week. The Elks didn’t meet their averages, but still gained 177 rushing yards. Wayne played two QBs — starter Braxton Miller and backup Javon Harrison — in winning last week, 9-5 vs. Beavercreek, to keep control of its playoff destiny.
Where: Memorial Stadium
Notable: Continues one of the nation’s longest high school rivalries. After an 82-14 defeat of Ponitz Tech in the opener, Piqua has struggled on offense, although QB Tyler Martin has combined for 1,254 yards rushing and passing. Troy had come on strong before a 25-13 defeat to Trotwood-Madison last week. RBs Chris Basil and Marcus Foster have combined to average 117.1 rushing yards.
Where: Butler Memorial Field
Notable: Sidney won its first GWOC North game last week, 35-7 over Piqua. RB Jack Foy has come on strong, gaining 345 yards in the past two games. Butler also won last week, 38-7 over Miamisburg, when Trevor Wilson and Ryne Pugh combined to go 8-of-10 passing for 281 yards and 4 TDs.
Where: Evans Stadium
Notable: Beavercreek is close to repeating last season, when the Beavers started 5-0 but went 0-5 in the GWOC Central. Now 0-3 in the division, the Beavers have lost three straight, including defeats of 10-7 to Fairmont and 9-5 to Wayne. Springfield also took a hit in the division last week with a 19-14 loss to Fairmont, but QB George Walker passed for 128 yards and ran for 106 more.
Where: Northmont Stadium
Notable: Northmont is under pressure after losing 32-0 to Centerville last week while gaining just 101 yards. The Thunderbolts are hoping junior QB Robert Sakosky can spread the field to pressure the Fairmont defense. The Firebirds are 2-1 in the GWOC Central after beating Springfield, and QB Nick Bower could guide them into a Week 10 game against Centerville to decide the division title if both win.
Where: Buschmeyer Stadium
Notable: Fairborn came close in a 21-7 loss to Lebanon last weekend, and QB Ryan Cook snapped back with his first 100-yard passing game (160 yards) in his past three. Miamisburg has lost six straight since taking its opener against Bellbrook, and the Vikings have failed to reach double digits in points since Week 4.
Where: Jim VanDeGrift Stadium
Notable: Lebanon is looking good for the playoffs at No. 7 in D-I, Region 4, with 2-6 Xenia and 1-7 Miamisburg remaining. QB Dusty Isaacs is closing in on 2,000 yards passing, standing at 1,595 with two weeks remaining. Xenia’s main offensive weapon might be Dakota Anderson, and not for his line play. The senior averages 39.5 yards per punt.
Where: Roush Stadium
Notable: The closest Alter has been to an opponent is 15 points in its Week 3 defeat of St. John from Washington, D.C. Since, the Knights have won by 20, 26, 39, 28 and 27 points. Purcell Marian has lost six straight, including a 25-3 to CJ last week.
Where: CareFlight Field
Notable: Despite the records, Trotwood is in the much better playoff position, at No. 5 in D-II, Region 8. The Rams control their own destiny, and their offense is clicking behind QB Marcus Graham and RB Antwan Gilbert. Springboro is No. 11 in D-I, Region 4, and the Panthers will need more help from RB Antoin Campbell, second in the GWOC at 1,348 rushing yards.
Where: Mack Hummon Field
Notable: This could be Oakwood’s final significant chance for a win with 5-3 Franklin coming in Week 10. The Lumberjacks came close against 6-2 Waynesville in Week 7 (a 24-12 loss). Bellbrook has beaten only 6-2 Valley View, 21-16 in Week 6.
