Donations made during the matchup with Middletown could lead to season tickets at Miami.

The Lebanon Warriors host Middletown in a varsity football scrimmage at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, and it’s the kind of wake-up call that should rally a community.

The event at James VanDeGrift Stadium behind Lebanon Junior High School is billed as the “Rob Shaw Scholarship Scrimmage,” with donations being accepted for the Robert M. Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Warren County Foundation.

Mr. Shaw died of cancer, leaving a legacy as Lebanon’s No. 1 booster. Mr. Shaw owned an excavating company and worked tirelessly on school and community projects, including the athletic fields.

“Rob kept the clock for our girls basketball team for as long as I know, and he was a stablemate in our community, our athletic program and our school,” Lebanon High School Athletic Director Joe Roberts said. “He was one of those guys who everybody knew and everybody loved.”

Fans making donations at the scrimmage, no matter how small, will be given two raffle tickets for the chance to win four season tickets to Miami University’s 2009 home football games, and four season tickets to the RedHawks’ 2009-10 men’s home basketball games.

Proceeds from the scrimmage will help fund two one-year, $500 scholarships awarded to graduating Lebanon High School students — one male, one female — who have demonstrated their commitment to community service in Mr. Shaw’s name.

To be considered, students must complete an application, including a record of their community service activities and hours, provide a brief statement addressing their financial need, and have a grade-point average of 2.7 or higher.

The scholarship winners for the 2008-2009 school year were Kaitlyn Turner and Kevin Flaig.
