MADISON TWP. — Carlisle High School girls’ basketball coach Randy Glover joked on Saturday afternoon that he was going to ask the Ohio High School Athletic Association if it was illegal to start four 6-footers in a single game.
The not-so-serious comment came shortly after the Indians were outmanned by Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division host Madison 72-30. Four of Madison’s starters — seniors Ally Malott and Rachel Blevins and juniors Brittany Shields and Ashley Cox — all stand 6 foot or taller.
“We don’t have a 6-footer on our roster,” said Glover, whose team dropped to 10-3 overall and 5-3 in the league. “Today their size was definitely a factor.”
The Mohawks, ranked eighth in the current Division III state poll, wasted little time taking advantage of their height. If it wasn’t Malott making a layup, it was Blevins. The duo combined for 37 points with Malott scoring a game-high 25 and Blevins adding 12, which tied her season high.
“Rachel did a helluva job,” said Madison coach John Rossi Jr., as his squad improved to 12-3 overall and 8-0 in the SWBL Buckeye. “She really came to play today. I think this will be huge for her confidence, too.”
Blevins scored eight of her points during an 18-0 run by the Mohawks that spanned the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters. Just before that run, Carlisle was within four points at 11-7. The next time the Indians scored, Madison was up 29-7.
“That was the difference in the game,” Rossi said. “Any time you can shut somebody out for a long period of time, it gives you confidence and gets them second guessing themselves.
“In the last three or four minutes of the first quarter and the first couple in the second, we got deflections and turned them into steals and converted those into points,” he continued. “We did a great job of executing our gameplan, especially on the defensive end.”
Malott nearly had a triple-double for the Mohawks. In addition to her 25 points, she had 12 rebounds and eight assists.
“Ally only had one 3-pointer (in the game), so you know where she did her damage,” Glover said. “When they smell a weakness, they know how to exploit it. They found our weakness and went for it. Their size dictated the game.”
Alexis Murphy scored 11 points to lead Carlisle, which will host West Carrollton on Tuesday. Madison is back in action Thursday at Preble Shawnee.
