Thurgood Marshall’s boys high school basketball team has forfeited three games because of an ineligible player.
Cougars head coach Darnell Hoskins confirmed on Wednesday the team will forfeit defeats of Meadowdale, Jefferson and Belmont. Wednesday night, Marshall defeated visiting North College Hill 69-45. That leaves the Cougars with a 2-4 record following four losses to open the season.
But the only game Marshall has lost on the floor was the season opener to Dunbar, 58-57.
The infraction involved a reserve player who later was deemed ineligible.
“That’s exactly what happened,” Hoskins said.
“It really wasn’t a huge deal but nonetheless, we have to get penalized for it because he did play in those games. We’ll be fine, though.”
Marshall was last season’s Division II state runner-up.
In 2009, Marshall’s undefeated football team also forfeited three games because of an academically ineligible player and missed the playoffs. Jefferson forfeited five games, but still won the D-IV boys basketball state title in 2010.
