Tim Lewis wanted to instill some old-school tradition into Miamisburg High School’s football program. That’s what he knew after 20 seasons as head coach of the Vikings. That’s what he thought was needed.
“We really tried to push some things that the program had gotten away from,” said Lewis, who announced his resignation from the program on Wednesday.
“We tried to teach the kids about tradition and what it was all about. I felt that what we were selling, they weren’t buying.”
Lewis, 54, is the third Greater Western Ohio Conference head coach to resign in the last week and fourth since the regular season ended.
On Tuesday, Adam Taylor resigned at Springfield after just five months and one season. Late last week Rob Berger resigned after three seasons at West Carrollton. Previously, veteran Troy coach Steve Nolan resigned after 28 seasons with the Trojans.
Lewis, a Miamisburg graduate, had two terms as the Vikings’ head coach. His first lasted 18 years. He returned as an assistant, then once again served as head coach the last two seasons.
The Vikings were 1-9 in 2010 and 2-8 this season.
“I was not able to get the results that we wanted,” said Lewis, who began his Miamisburg coaching career as a senior in college when former head coach Mike Schneider lured him to the sidelines. “Winning three games in two years is unacceptable.”
The Vikings began last season 2-1 after beating Bellbrook and rival West Carrollton and losing 23-22 to Fairmont. However, seven straight losses followed to end the season.
“If you’re going to be successful, the kids, staff, parents all need to buy in and be on the same page, and it wasn’t happening,” he said.
