MIAMISBURG — David Bruton already has made history. In a week, he’ll do it again.

The first Miamisburg High School athlete to play football at Notre Dame, he’s about to become the first player in Vikings history to be drafted into the NFL.

All indications are that the 2005 Miamisburg graduate and Fighting Irish free safety will have his name called when the draft unfolds at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26.

“I’ve been truly blessed to have a great supporting cast with coach (Tim) Lewis and his family, along with all the other coaches at Miamisburg High School,” said Bruton, who is in town with his parents, David Sr. and Constance, and his 3-year-old son, Jaden, through the two-day draft.

A 6-foot-2, 219-pounder, Bruton led Notre Dame’s defense last fall with 91 tackles, four interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Then he surprised pro scouts with a stunning performance at the NFL combine in February, unleashing a 4.46 clocking in the 40-yard dash, a 41.5-inch vertical leap and an 11-foot broad jump.

Former Dallas Cowboys vice president Gil Brandt, who coordinates special events for the NFL, was impressed.

“(Bruton) has great range as a safety and is a special teams ace,” Brandt said.

Bruton’s parents are hosting a draft party at Bullwinkle’s Top Hat Bistro in Miamisburg next Sunday. It’s the first of two celebrations.

The other is Sunday, May 17, when he graduates from Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology. The commencement speaker: President Barack Obama.
