MIDDLETOWN — A standout Middie athlete is in trouble again after a female classmate accused him of assaulting and holding her against her will inside a hotel room, police said.

Dwayne “DeeJay” Hunter Jr., 18, was arrested at Middletown High School today, May 11, according to police.

Hunter, a member of the MHS track team, is one of the top sprinters in the state.

He was charged with assault and unlawful restraint after a 17-year-old girl said he choked and slammed her against a wall Saturday, May 9, at the Middletown Ramada Inn, according to authorities.

The girl, whom police said had a restraining order against Hunter, was encouraged by friends to tell her mother, who called police today.

The alleged victim is the same female who Hunter was found guilty in juvenile court of assaulting this past summer, according to police.

Hunter is awaiting trial for felonious assault charges stemming from a Jan. 12 shooting in which he allegedly shot a 15-year-old boy in the face with a BB gun. He could receive up to eight years in prison if found guilty of the second-degree felony.

Hunter was in Middletown City Jail today on $7,500 bond and will be arraigned at 9 a.m. in Middletown Municipal Court on Wednesday, May 13, authorities said.

As an athlete, Hunter’s time of 10.5 seconds in the 100-meter dash is the top mark in the Greater Miami Conference. He also is a member of the Middies’ 400 and 800 relays, which both rank No. 1 in the GMC.

The GMC meet is Wednesday and Friday at Fairfield High School.

“The incident is under investigation and appropriate action will be taken,” said Middletown City Schools communication specialist Debbie Alberico.

Alberico said the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibits the district from publicly releasing school disciplinary action when a student is identified.

In general, Alberico said when a student is suspended from school, the student is also prohibited from participating in extra curricular activities.
