KETTERING — The Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division is tough. Just ask Jim Brown.

And ask his Northmont High School boys basketball team. The Thunderbolts defeated Fairmont 51-33 on Friday, a game Northmont (10-4, 5-2) dominated at times on defense but still couldn’t leave without a fourth-quarter scare.

Fairmont (6-9, 2-5) had scored nine points in the game halfway through the third quarter, then erupted behind guard Jordan Glaser’s 15 points. Northmont survived behind good foul shooting and big plays from point guard Devon Carter.

“I don’t think people realize how difficult the Central Division is,” Brown said. “There isn’t an easy game. There isn’t anybody that you can go in and say your subs will be able to play. Other than Beavercreek, the only reason some of their records aren’t good is because we are beating each other up.”

Both teams beat each other up through the first quarter. The game was scoreless until Northmont’s Jamal Trammell hit a short jumper with 3:35 left. Cameron Taylor came off the bench with two 3-pointers, and Northmont was off on a 10-0 run.

Northmont began the second half with a 10-2 run and was up 33-11 at one point. Fairmont woke up with a run of its own.

The Firebirds cut the lead to nine, but Carter put the game away when he converted on a three-point-play with 2:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Carter finished with 18 points. He shot 4-of-5 from the field and made 7-of-7 foul shots in the second half.

“Devon is a heck of a player,” Brown said. “I think he got a little frustrated because our offense got bogged down and they did a good job on him. But he stuck with it and made a couple big plays. When you can shoot and you are as quick as he is, you are really hard to guard. I think he’s the best player in the whole league.”

Things don’t get easier for Northmont. Today the T-Bolts host Cincinnati La Salle, the third-ranked team in the state Division I poll. Then it’s a trip to Meadowdale on Tuesday before hosting Central Division leader Beavercreek on Friday.”

“It’s a real tough stretch,” Brown said. “But I told our kids though, this is what you want. We play La Salle. It’s a great opportunity, and who knows.”
