No area football team has been hit harder by the scheduling monster than Oakwood.
The Lumberjacks appear to be listing at 2-3. But their losses have been to teams with a combined 15-0 record.
Fenwick, Carlisle and Eaton — each in the top 12 in the state ranking points and each 5-0 — all have defeated Oakwood. The Lumberjacks are at Brookville (2-3) on Friday.
Cougars win, but ...
Marshall ran its football record to 4-1 with a 48-13 defeat of visiting West Side (Gary, Ind.) last Saturday. Despite that lofty record, the Cougars will be hard-pressed to advance in the D-IV, Region 16 playoffs.
Upcoming City League rivals Ponitz Tech, Meadowdale and Belmont are a combined 1-14. At this point, only two teams with winning records remain on Marshall’s schedule: Dunbar (3-2) and Columbus Bishop Hartley (4-1).
Beating visiting Hartley in Week 7 is Marshall’s must-win playoff shot. That won’t be easy: Hartley’s only loss was 34-28 in OT to unbeaten Elyria Catholic, the state’s top ranked D-IV team.
• Dunbar takes a three-game win streak to Louisville Male (5-1) on Friday. Among Male’s most famous alums is former University of Louisville and Utah Jazz basketball standout Darrell Griffith.
• Fenwick (5-0) is unbeaten, just as it was at this point last season. But the Falcons are hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself, because they dropped their last five games of the ’09 season.
Fenwick is at unbeaten Roger Bacon (5-0) in a great GCL crossover matchup on Friday. The Falcons also are at Alter in Week 8 and at Carroll in Week 10.
• Troy (4-1) is no lock to make the D-I, Region 3 playoffs. Despite only a loss to unbeaten Middletown, the Trojans are No. 8 — the last qualifying position.
Troy will have to fare well against Butler, rival Piqua and Trotwood in succession, because its last two games are against computer-point challenged Miamisburg (1-4) and Sidney (0-5).
