Overview: A largely defensive struggle turned into a 34-6 Piqua win at Fairborn on Friday night thanks to a huge momentum shift right before halftime.
After spending most of the first half in the shadow of their own goal posts, the Indians needed a spark. With under two minutes left in the half, Jon Dembski brought his team to life.
Piqua’s senior running back broke free for a 73-yard gain, setting up a Tyler Welbaum touchdown that broke a 6-6 stalemate and put the Indians up for good.
Momentum on their side, the Indians dominated the second half. They demoralized the Skyhawks with their rushing attack and punishing defense, which recorded six sacks and two interceptions.
Turning point: Trailing by a touchdown in the third quarter, Fairborn dug deep and stopped the Indians at their 10-yard line. Piqua kicker Evan Grissom missed the field goal, but was hit by a Skyhawk defender, resulting in a first down.
A few plays later, Dembski scored to make it a two-touchdown game.
Stat pack: Dembski carried the load, rushing for 186 yards and two touchdowns. Welbaum added a late 83-yard touchdown to finish with three on 89 yards. On defense, Travis Nees had a pair of picks and Solomon Carnes led the Indians with 2.5 sacks.
Fairborn quarterback Kendrick Williams threw for 146 yards in the loss.
Quote: “It feels great in my last senior game to get a win. It feels really good to know I helped my team by having a good game.” — Dembski
