PIQUA — The Coldwater Cavaliers would not be denied a spot in the state semifinals.

Quarterback Austin Bruns tossed three touchdown passes in a 28-6 defeat of West Jefferson on Friday in the Division V, Region 20 final at Piqua High School.

West Jefferson scored first on a 38-yard pass from Cody Williams to Ryan Love, but the Cavaliers countered with a 15-yard pass from Bruns to Caleb Siefring before halftime.

But the Cavaliers were just getting started.

Coldwater (9-3) pulled away in the third quarter as Bruns connected on a 68-yard pass to Siefring and a 72-yarder to Josh Huber. The Cavaliers amassed 493 total yards and Bruns completed 13-of-20 passes for 337 yards.

Bruns also rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries.

Coldwater’s semifinal opponent will be announced Sunday.

Shawnee 21, Jonathan Alder 10: Springfield Shawnee won the first regional title (Division III, Region 12) in school history by defeating Jonathan Alder at the Hilliard Bradley Athletic Complex.

Trailing 7-0 at halftime, Shawnee used an interception by Jordan Huggins on the first possession of the second half to set up a 5-yard touchdown pass from Brad Jarzab to Nick Hines with 4:58 remaining in the third quarter.

Jonathan Alder went ahead 10-7, but it was all Shawnee from there. The Braves took the lead 14-10 on a 12-yard TD run by Alex McCrory (130 yards rushing) with 8:37 remaining. Then, after forcing the Pioneers to punt, Jarzab (122 yards rushing) scored on a 23-yard run to seal the win.

The Braves (13-0) advanced to play in the state semifinals, with opponent and site to be determined.

“We set out in two-a-days to win the regional championship, and it just feels good to get what we’ve been working for all season long,” McCrory said.

“When you’re a little kid playing in the backyard, these are the things you dream of. To be in the state final four, it’s a dream come true.”
