If the long layoff bothered Springboro senior Brandon Walker, it was nothing compared to a loss in the Greater Western Ohio Conference finals.
Walker, who lost two heartbreakers at the state tournament last season en route to a fourth-place finish, missed most of the regular season recovering from surgery after he tore a labrum in the third week of the football season.
The 182-pounder was able to make it back prior to the league tournament, but missed becoming a four-time GWOC champion when he dropped a 3-2 decision to Springfield’s Darryl Grayson.
His downfall at Trent Arena that day, according to him, was conditioning.
So Walker vowed to be in better shape when he met Grayson in the Division I sectional finals two weeks later. “The past two weeks, I’ve been doing three-a-days,” Walker said after beating Grayson 3-1 with a takedown with a second left in overtime in the sectional finals. “I went running before school, went to our practice and then went and worked out someplace different each night. It helped me out a lot.”
Walker is in the opposite side of the bracket from Grayson at the Fairfield district tournament this weekend. The top four from each weight class advance to the state tournament.
Edwards rewrites record book: Another weekend, another record-breaking performance for Greenville senior Jon Edwards.
Edwards became Greenville’s first four-time sectional champ last weekend when he won the 152 title at Eaton, giving him 161 career wins, building on his school record.
According to the records listed on the Ohio High School Athletic Association website, Edwards’s 566 career takedowns rank him fifth in the Dayton area and 37th in the state all-time.
He moved to fourth all-time with 19 technical falls in a season at Greenville when he had one in the sectional finals.
Girl power: Wayne sophomore Sarah Allen has another week to make weight. The Warriors’ 113-pounder qualified for the district tournament after finishing fourth at the Centerville 2 sectional tournament over the weekend.
Allen, who was seeded third, advanced to the semifinals before dropping an 11-5 decision to second seed Jacob Sharp of Sidney. Allen qualified for the district when she won by default over Noah Goodin of Stebbins.
