Springboro used a suffocating defense, forcing 19 Fairborn turnovers to upset the Skyhawks 53-34 in girls high school basketball action Wednesday, Jan. 27.

“The turnovers killed us. Springboro played excellent defense the entire game,” Fairborn coach Steve Hannaford said.

Hannaford had additional praise for the Panthers, who improved their record to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference South Division.

“With the return of Katie Schubert to full strength after an injury, Springboro has become the team everyone thought they would be.”

Olivia Schretzman, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, led the Panthers with 15 points. Megan Graber added 14.

Jaymee Venee paced Fairborn (12-3, 4-1) with 17 points. The Skyhawks came into the game as the third-ranked Division I team in the DDN ratings.

Trotwood-Madison 50, Lebanon 28: The Rams tuned up for their game on Saturday against Vandalia with an easy win.

Karis Watts scored 14 points and Jordyn Calhoun added 12 for Trotwood.

Marie McKinnon scored 10 to lead Lebanon.

Beavercreek 54, Springfield 39: Senior Sammy Haddix poured in 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to pace the visiting Beavers in this GWOC Central contest.

Sara Kocian and Erin Walsh added 10 points each for Beavercreek (11-5, 5-1), ranked No. 2 in the DDN Division I ratings.

MaRanda Boddie-Cannon, a 6-1 senior, was best for Springfield (4-12, 2-4) with 23 points.

Fairmont 44, Wayne 33: The Firebirds stayed perfect in the GWOC Central (6-0) with this win over the Warriors.

Cassie Sant’s 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and four blocks paced Fairmont. Chelsea Welch scored nine points and blocked four shots.

Angie Clark scored eight points to lead Wayne (6-11, 0-6).

Vandalia Butler 59, Piqua 21: The Aviators held Piqua to one field goal in the second half to prevail in this GWOC North contest.

Brianna Innocent scored 13 points to lead Butler (11-4, 3-2).

The Aviators face rival Trotwood-Madison in a key GWOC North contest on Saturday at Trotwood.

Centerville 64, Northmont 47: Kristin Bruggeman poured in 21 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Elks.

Ashtyn Payne’s 14 points was best for the Thunderbolts.

Troy 46, Sidney 37: Troy (8-7, 3-2) went 12-of-15 from the charity stripe, including five of six in the final minute to seal the deal in this GWOC North battle.
