SPRINGFIELD — Eric Gillespie, a 1983 Stebbins High School graduate, is expected to become Springfield High’s football coach tonight when recommended to the school board by Superintendent Paul Estrop.
Gillespie will be the third coach in five seasons at Springfield, which went 2-8 in 2011 under Adam Taylor, who resigned. “His background and experience are a good match,” Estrop said. “He’s known for turning programs around.”
Gillespie had two winning season and a 20-31 record in five years (2007-11) as head coach of Richmond (Ind.). In three seasons at Fairborn (1999-2001), he went 14-16.
He coached Hamilton to an 0-10 mark in 2002, but his tenure ended weeks before the 2003 season after he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, failure to control his vehicle and leaving the scene of a single-car accident. Gillespie pleaded no contest in January 2004 and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, but a judge suspended 27 on the condition he complete a substance abuse program.
