CENTERVILLE — The Winton Woods High School football team galloped past the Tecumseh Arrows and into the Division II, Region 8 final next week.
The Warriors scored 33 points in the first half on their way to a 40-7 win on Friday, Nov. 13, at Centerville Stadium in a regional semifinal.
The Arrows finish the season with a 10-2 record, back-to-back playoff appearances and back-to-back Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division titles.
The Warriors had 295 yards rushing in the first half and scored touchdowns on five of their seven drives. They finished the game 462 total yards, 439 on the ground.
Winton Woods quarterback Dominique Brown, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior, showed why he’ll play at the University of Cincinnati next year with 198 yards rushing and two touchdowns. His last run of the game was an 80-yard sprint early in the third quarter. Jeremiah Goins followed that with a 1-yard run for the final score.
It went that way much of the night for the Arrows, who had no answer for the Warriors’ unyielding speed.
“I thought the kids were ready to play. I thought they were prepared. I felt like they played hard and gave a great effort,” Tecumseh head coach Kent Massie said. “I always ask them to give a great effort, and they certainly did that tonight. We just ran into a better football team than us.”
Tecumseh, the region’s No. 3 seed and ranked No. 8 in the state, scored its only touchdown on a 31-yard pass from Riley Gault to Ryan Christmann with 3:16 to go in the first quarter. The score was set up by a fumble recovery by Dustin Holmes, who also had an interception later in the half.
Otherwise, the Arrows couldn’t move the ball and finished with 156 total yards. Holmes had 42 yards rushing and Gault 52 yards passing before leaving with an ankle injury late in the first half.
The Arrows’ senior class leaves the program with the most wins in school history (36) and three playoff appearances, with one playoff win each time.
“You guys stepped up and played for pride,” Massie told the team after the game. “When you walk off the field, walk off with your head held high.”
Winton Woods (10-2, No. 6 in the state) will play Trotwood-Madison next week at a neutral site. Trotwood is the No. 4 seed and beat top-seeded Turpin on Friday.
Winton Woods has been to the Region 8 final two years in a row.
