1. Beavercreek vs. Fairmont, Dec. 19 & Feb. 3: Fairmont, coming off a D-I regional final appearance and led by UD-recruit Cassie Sant, has high expectations. Senior-led Beavercreek isn’t about to back off in this GWOC Central Division rivalry, not after sharing the division title last season and splitting two games decided by four points. Adding to the fun: Fairmont beat Beavercreek in the regional semis last season.
2. Alter vs. Chaminade Julienne, Dec. 16 & Jan. 29: The Catholic school rivalry is intense no matter the divisions, but CJ dropping down into D-II adds extra spice. The GGCL Grey North co-champs (games decided by one and six points) are both capable of visiting Columbus in March. Alter returns a talented group that reached the D-II state semis last season, while CJ’s Samarie Walker, a Connecticut recruit, is considered the area’s top player.
3. Fairmont at Alter, Jan. 25: As local rivalries go it doesn’t get much better than this; D-I regional finalist Fairmont vs. D-II state semifinalist Alter. The two teams hook up for the first time since 2007. Both could be state ranked by the time they play. If so, the only thing they will care about this night is being the best team in Kettering.
4. Fairborn vs. Xenia, Jan. 13 & Feb. 6: Xenia returns a talented group, including Wright State recruit Jessica Alexander, that rolled through the GWOC South. Fairborn hopes to have something to say about that this season. The Skyhawks won 14 games and expectations are even higher this season, especially in this Greene County grudge match. Fairborn gave Xenia its two biggest scares last season, losing both games by just four points combined.
5. Tippecanoe vs. Kenton Ridge, Dec. 23 & Feb. 6: Kenton Ridge lost three games last season. Tipp was responsible for two of them, sweeping the season series to win the CBC Kenton Division title. Three starters are back for a Tipp team that won the AP poll title in D-II. KR returns eight with varsity experience.
