Your pockets have been picked by presents and charitable donations, the job market remains poor and soon the tax monster will rear its ugly head. And now I’m going to ask that you donate for something you might consider low priority.

Trotwood-Madison’s undefeated state champion football team needs $15,000 to fund about 100 commemorative rings for the players, staff and cheerleaders.

I know, running with or catching a football is not part of state minimums in education.

Maybe T-M superintendent Rexann Wagner can change your mind.

“All extracurricular activities are designated to grow the whole child,” Wagner said. “Academic work is certainly important and our main focus. But athletics teaches, responsibility, sharing, discipline.

“This state championship is a lifetime event. It’s something citizens in the community can be proud of. The ring is that visible token each of those students will have the rest of their lives.”

Did I tell you the starters on the Rams’ defense averaged a 3.2 gpa and the starting offense a 3.1?

Each ring costs $146 and T-M is asking area businesses and citizens to help raise the money. The school district has also provided containers at several area business where people can leave donations.

School officials want the rings to be distributed at halftime of a basketball game Feb. 17.

Your new electronic toy will be outdated in a month or so. A championship ring lasts forever.
