VANDALIA — Soon after his Trotwood-Madison football team put a 56-15 regular-season-ending romp on Butler, Rams coach Maurice Douglass became a supporter of the Aviators.

The Rams likely clinched the top seed in the Division II, Region 8 playoffs with the second undefeated season in school history.

The Aviators (6-4) need help to get in and find out Sunday if they made the D-II, Region 8 playoffs as well. They entered the game No. 7.

The top eight qualify.

“I hope they make it in, because that’ll give us three teams from the North,” Douglass said after winning the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s North Division for a fourth straight season. “That’s what we want.”

On Friday, Trotwood put together one of its most complete games.

The Rams scored on their first six possessions (not counting taking a knee to end the first half), and one of Butler’s as Bam Bradley returned a tipped-pass interception 24 yards for a 21-0 lead with 3:49 left in the first quarter.

Senior quarterback Michael Simpson completed 15 of 23 passes for 325 yards — giving him 2,024 for the season, unofficially — and two touchdowns. He added 42 yards rushing and another score.

Receiver Dalin Byrd hauled in five of those passes for 129 yards and a TD.

The victory gave Trotwood its second 10-0 season in school history, matching the 1981 team that Douglass played on. That team reached the state finals and finished second. The Rams also finished second in D-II in 2010.

“We’re just thankful we have an opportunity to go out here and make history,” Douglass said of reaching the postseason again. “We’re going to finish the deal this year.”

For the Aviators, they just hope they get the chance. Their last postseason appearance was 2003.

“It’s out of our hands. That’s a good ballclub and we may have to face them next week again,” Butler coach Greg Bush said.

“We’re a much improved football team. They’re better than us, but I’m still proud of my kids. (Trotwood is) just a year removed from the state finals and we’re just two years away from being 2-8.”

Added Douglass: “We’re excited for our division. We love the GWOC as a whole, but sometimes we don’t always get as much notoriety as the Central does.

“Hopefully Butler will get in and we’ll have three teams from the North.”
