Former Trotwood-Madison High School three-sport standout Andrew Higgins died on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Upper Malboro, Md., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The 2003 graduate was 24.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Rhema Lighthouse Christian Center, 3271 Glen Helen Road, Dayton. Visitation is at 10 a.m.
Higgins was a standout in basketball and track and field. He played football only his senior year and signed an athletic scholarship to play at the University of Akron.
“He comes from an outstanding family,” said T-M Athletic Director Jim Ladd prior to Friday’s playoff football game against visiting Mount Healthy. “You’ve got to feel for them and what they’re going through and their loss. It’s a great loss.
“He was a very outgoing young man, a hard worker and outstanding leader. He was the kind of guy you wouldn’t mind dating your daughter. He was a good dude.”
Higgins averaged 13.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Rams in basketball as a senior, playing for coach Ike Thornton. Higgins was named second-team Division I All-Area.
However, it was his brief Rams football career, ironically, that would earn him a college scholarship.
After watching the Rams’ first game in the fall of 2002, coach Maurice Douglass urged Higgins to try out. By midseason, he was a starting wideout. According to T-M stats, he caught 20 passes for 608 yards (30.4 average) and eight touchdowns.
That helped earn the Rams a spot in the playoffs.
