If Trotwood-Madison and Wayne are to remain atop the Greater Western Ohio Conference, they’ll have to successfully undergo full makeovers.
Mark Baker resigned from Trotwood last spring after three seasons. The Rams dipped to 18-6 but still won their sixth straight conference title. Trotwood is a staggering 55-3 in conference play in that span.
Former Rams varsity assistant Rocky Rockhold inherited the top job. Even before he was promoted, standout guard Andre Yates had transferred to Dunbar.
Meanwhile, this will be the first season that Wayne coach Travis Trice won’t have his son, Travis III, or Marcus Crider in the lineup.
The Warriors are 81-14 in Trice’s four years, including 22-2 last season.
Players to watch
• Northmont could count on steady 6-4 Jamal Trammell for 13.1 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season. He’ll likely bump those numbers as a senior. An outstanding wide receiver with a nonstop motor, he’ll play football in college.
With Trammell, guard Devon Carter, 6-5 Troy Mangen and 6-6 Terry Ramsey, veteran coach Jim Brown’s club is as good as any to contend for a GWOC Central title.
• Troy is without three-year starter Lance Carter because of graduation, but the other half of its go-to combo returns in 6-4 senior Cody May. A standout quarterback on the Trojans football team, May averaged 14.2 points and 8.6 rebounds as a junior.
• Six-foot-10 Maverick Morgan ducked under the intimidating radar as a sophomore, but that doesn’t fit the junior now. The Panthers could be in for their best seasons since the Doliboa brothers if Morgan continues to progress.
• Centerville senior Jake Campbell gets a nod because he’s a rare 7-footer. Still developing, his best years likely are ahead of him at the next level.
• Conner Myslowski showed flashes of brilliance last season at West Carrollton. A 6-4 junior, he went for a team-high 15.3 points and put 40 on Sidney.
Sitting out
Vandalia Butler could have paired 6-9 seniors Taylor Decker and Taylore Cherry up front. However, neither will play this season.
Decker is headed to Notre Dame to play football. Although not graduating early, he’ll pass on basketball to concentrate on lifting weights and conditioning.
Cherry has already signed to pitch at North Carolina. He’s also expected to be a first-round Major League Baseball draft choice in June.
