TROY — For five games, Tyler Jones and the Vandalia Butler High School football team had their way.
Behind Taylor Decker and Miles Eaton — 300-pound offensive linemen — Jones had rushed for more than 1,000 yards as Butler built a 5-0 record.
That was before the Aviators ran into Troy, the No. 1 team in the DDN Division I ratings.
The Trojans defeated Butler 49-15 on Friday. They did it by building an early lead, taking advantage of Butler mistakes and running its offense to precision in the second half.
“We didn’t do anything offensively and we got down early,” Butler coach Greg Bush said. “We wanted to keep the ball out of Troy’s hands and we couldn’t.”
Jones had 24 carries for 165 yards and two touchdowns on Friday.
The Trojan defense did its job, with the exception of a 66-yard burst in the third quarter that set up Butler’s last score.
The Trojans rushed for 308 yards as a team. Isaiah Williams rushed seven times for 91 yards and three touchdowns off of Troy’s sweep, while Zach Jones pounded the ball up the middle 13 times for 96 yards and one touchdown.
Troy also dominated on special teams. A botched snap on a punt allowed Williams to run in for his first touchdown in the first quarter. Troy scored again in the second on another Williams run. It came after Ian Dunaway returned a punt into Butler territory and set the Trojans up with good field position.
But it was his defense that a smiling Steve Nolan came back to. A defense that has the Trojans at 5-1 and 1-0 in a competitive GWOC North Division.
“We really contained them and it made the difference,” the Troy coach said. “It enabled us to get our stuff together.”
