Overview: The Trojans were sluggish the first half, playing as if they were still sulking from a 29-21 loss to state-ranked Middletown last week. Coach Steve Nolan was worried the loss took a lot out of his team.
Offensive and defensive adjustments made at halftime allowed Troy to dominate the final two quarters after leading 7-3 at intermission. Linebacker Miles Hibbler and Nick Zimmer pressured Fairborn QB Kendrick Williams almost the entire second half allowing him to complete only 3-of-11 passes for 43 yards. Williams had 38 of those yards on the Skyhawks first drive the second half.
Turning point: Each team scored on the first drives of the second half, with Troy leading 14-11. After Fairborn scored it didn’t get a first down the rest of the game. Quarterback Cody May picked apart the Fairborn defense, throwing for one touchdown and setting up two others.
Stat pack: Williams was 10 for 23 for 193 yards the first half. The second half he couldn’t find open receivers and ended the night 13 of 34 for 236 yards and one interception. Troy’s May was 5 for 7 the second half for 78 yards, including a 28-yard TD pass to Isaiah Williams.
Troy rushed for 213 yards and threw for 135.
Quote: “My assistants get a lot of credit for making the offensive and defensive adjustments at halftime. They put our kids in position to make some big plays on both sides of the ball and they did. — Nolan.
Up next: Springboro at Troy; Fairborn at Fairmont.
