Boys high school basketball rings in the new year with a couple of great games today. The DDN’s top-ranked Division II team Dunbar (8-0) hosts Beavercreek (5-1), ranked second in D-I.

The Wolverines haven’t had a close game since dodging Thurgood Marshall in the season opener by one point. Dunbar dismantled Canton McKinley 92-58 and Massillon Perry 77-57 in last week’s northern holiday swing.

The Beavers are the surprise of area D-I teams and are on a five-game win streak after falling to Middletown in their opener. Besides a formidable Greater Western Ohio Conference slate, the Beavers also have top-shelf games against unbeaten Springboro, Marshall and Jefferson.

Today’s other great showdown features Franklin (5-0) at Springboro (8-0). The Wildcats haven’t played since Dec. 16. The Panthers edged Meadowdale 56-55 and Middletown 49-47 to win their Domino’s Invite last week.
