GERMANTOWN — The Valley View High School football team needed defense, special teams luck and a Lonesome Polecat offense that would’ve made Glenn “Tiger” Ellison proud Friday, Oct. 16, at Barker Field.
Despite having starting quarterback Kyle Pohl (concussion) and senior running back Joe Kelly (leg) on the sidelines, Valley View managed a come-from-behind 22-8 win over visiting Carlisle
“This is a good win for us,” a hoarse Valley View coach Jay Niswonger said. “We told the kids all week that we didn’t have anybody hurt on special teams or on defense. Our kids really rose to the occasion tonight. This is a really big win for us. I bet Tiger would’ve smiled with this one. The Lonesome Polecat offense is alive and well in Germantown.”
Ellison, a hall-of-fame coach at Middletown High, invented the Lonesome Polecat offense more than 60 years ago. It’s a forerunner of the run-and-shoot with an unbalanced line to the left.
Carlisle got on the scoreboard first when senior linebacker Jake Langdon tackled Valley View running back Zac Cottingim in the end zone for a safety with 5:18 left to play in the first half. That score stood up for the halftime margin.
With sophomore Patrick Boyle and junior Brandon Fox sharing the quarterback duties, Valley View took the lead in the third quarter with a 12-play drive that was capped with a lucky bounce.
On fourth-and-21, Fox rolled to his right and heaved a pass into the end zone toward Tyler Schenck. The ball was tipped twice by two different Indians defenders before Rob Skidmore caught the deflection for the touchdown. Brad Miller hit the extra point, and the Spartans had a 7-2 lead.
Carlisle took advantage of a late-hit penalty to retake the lead with 6:39 left to play. Quarterback Jake Gibson scored from a yard out to make it 8-7 Carlisle, but Valley View’s Chris Lykins batted down the two-point try.
The Indians’ lead didn’t last long.
Schenck took the kickoff at his own 15 and raced 85 yards down the right sideline for the score.
“I just looked for the end zone, made a couple cuts and I was gone,” Schenck said. “I wasn’t going to let anybody catch up to me.”
Fox clinched the game with 1:51 to play when he broke free for a 68-yard TD run. A Miller PAT made it 22-7.
Fox led Valley View with 148 yards rushing. Carlisle’s Nick McGill led everybody with 152 yards rushing on 26 carries.
“This win feels amazing. Especially when they had Jordan (Jacobs) and Adam (Emrick) over there. This feels really good to win this,” Schenck added.
Both Jacobs and Emrick transferred to Carlisle from Valley View after last season.
