Wayne High School could find out as early as Wednesday, March 10, the status of two of its key boys basketball players, according to an Ohio High School Athletic Association official.

“We do have some school administrators coming in on Wednesday to try and clarify the status of those kids transferring,” Bob Goldring, an assistant commissioner with the OHSAA, said Monday, March 8.

At issue is the eligibility of senior Xavier Jones, a transfer from Gary, Ind., and junior Isiah Boddie, a transfer from Trotwood-Madison. Both have been enrolled at Wayne since the start of this school year.

Jones also has played with fellow Warriors Travis Trice, Markus Crider and Keith Clements on the Indiana-based AAU team Sport Youth Foundation Players.

Jones, a 6-foot-3 guard, averages 11.2 points and was a second-team All-Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division pick.

Boddie, a 6-2 junior, averages 5.7 points and was honorable mention All-GWOC Central.

Neither played in Wayne’s 64-54 defeat of Xenia in a Division I sectional final on Sunday. Both have played in postseason games, though, which could jeopardize Wayne’s postseason should it be ruled ineligible.

“I’m not sure how it came to our attention,” Goldring said.

“Our staff that normally handles bylaw interpretations will be involved in questioning because questions came up with some of their kids. I know they have been working with the school.”

Goldring indicated that the OHSAA hopes to resolve the matter by Saturday, when Wayne (20-2) is scheduled to play Cincinnati St. Xavier (12-10) in a district final at 7 p.m. at UD Arena.

Wayne coach Travis Trice declined to comment about the meeting.
