Overview: Fairmont jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but Wayne fired back behind the two-headed monster of Javon Harrison and Jalen Mack to win a 52-42 shootout at Roush Stadium. Relying on the zone read, the two Warriors rushed a combined 41 times and were the firepower behind a Wayne rushing attack that Fairmont’s defense couldn’t match. They needed every point with Firebird quarterback Tom West throwing four touchdown passes.
Turning point: Down by 10, Fairmont was driving into Wayne territory and had a fourth-and-six with 5:41 left in the fourth. West had a teammate open on a slant pattern, but the ball was tipped by a Wayne defender and fell incomplete. Wayne followed with a touchdown drive that gave the Warriors a 45-28 lead and enough cushion to withstand Fairmont’s offense.
Stat pack: Wayne’s Harrison was 8-of-13 passing for 138 yards and a touchdown. He rushed 22 times for 204 yards and four touchdowns. ... Mack rushed 19 times for 214 yards and had two rushes over 50 yards. ... Wayne’s offense totaled 556 yards. It was the second week in a row the Warriors scored more than 50 points. ... Fairmont’s Tom West was 22-of-33 passing for 325 yards and four touchdowns.
Quote: “We’re going to play some defense next year at Wayne High School, I can tell you that. I’m real proud of our guys, but this is the end of the shootouts. No more shootouts at the OK Corral.” — Wayne coach Jay Minton.
