Wayne gave up 63 points against Centerville last week, then gave up 30 in the first half against Northmont on Friday. That was when the Warriors had enough. Stuffing the run and intercepting Thunderbolts quarterback Cameron Belton twice, Wayne shut out Northmont in the second half and turned a shoot-out into a blowout behind a 51-point effort from its offense. The win put Wayne back over .500 (5-4) for the season (3-1 in the GWOC Central).
Turning point: Down 14 points, Northmont began working its way down field and deep into Wayne territory. Belton was slashing the Wayne defense with short passes until Tyree Kinnel — a freshman defensive back — intercepted Belton and returned it inside the Northmont 20 with 4:13 left. Jalen Mack scored several plays later on a one-yard touchdown run, and that put the game away.
Stat pack: Wayne’s Javon Harrison was 18-of-34 for 286 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. He rushed 16 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns. ... Belton was 30-of-52 for 341 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He rushed for one touchdown.
Quote: “It’s not one guy. I think we’ve relied on one guy to make a play here, or another guy to make a play there. Great defenses don’t play that way. You have to have 11 guys playing their assignments and playing good, tough defense.” — Wayne coach Jay Minton
Up Next: Wayne finishes its season with a trip to Fairmont. Northmont visits Springfield.
