Wayne can’t keep up with Glenville's athleticism

The plan was to stop the speedy invaders from making big plays; their shortest touchdown was from 18 yards out.

HUBER HEIGHTS — Cleveland Glenville High School has produced more Division I football recruits this decade than perhaps any program in the Midwest, sending 27 to BCS schools in the last five years alone.

And judging from the gasp-inducing athleticism on display against Wayne, those big-time programs will be scooping up more Tarblooders playmakers again this season.

Senior quarterback and cornerback Christian Bryant, an Ohio State target as a defensive back, scored four different ways — passing, running, kicking and an interception return — in a 57-28 rout before an overflow crowd at Heidkamp Stadium on Friday night, Sept. 11.

Glenville’s eight touchdowns came on quick strikes, none shorter than 18 yards.

“We knew how good their athletes were,” Wayne coach Jay Minton said. “We said for us to win, we couldn’t play their game. It had to be a game (without) big plays. But it turned out to be that — just big play, big play, big play. ... They’re ‘sick’ athletically.”

The Warriors (2-1) bolted to a 13-0 lead by scoring on their first two possessions. But the Tarblooders (2-1) zipped to a 29-20 edge after two quarters, then left Wayne slump-shouldered when Shane Wynn returned the second-half kickoff 99 yards for a TD and Bryant followed that by scoring on an 82-yard interception return.

Glenville put broiling pressure on Wayne star quarterback Braxton Miller, harassing him into a three-interception night. He finished 9-of-19 passing for 130 yards and one TD. He ran for two scores. Junior running back Anthone Taylor had 120 yards on 25 carries for the Warriors.

“We’ve got a few weapons here and there,” Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr. said. “The key is staying disciplined and fundamentally sound. We knew we were playing a real talented team. My hat’s off to their quarterback — he’s tough. But (after the first quarter) we settled down.”
