Waynesville has successfully passed a four-game challenge that featured all high school football playoff teams from a year ago.
Besides being 4-0, that also should provide the gift that keeps on giving: second-level computer points.
“It’s a tribute to the teams that we’ve played,” said Spartans coach Brandon Philpot after Waynesville was ranked No. 1 among Division IV, Region 16 teams in Tuesday’s first release of the Harbin computer rankings.
“I can see all four of them winning most of the games that they have left on their schedules, so I think that we’re going to stay pretty far up in the standings as far as the playoffs are concerned and as long as we take care of what we should do.”
Waynesville gave Eaton and Brookville their only setbacks. The Spartans also have beaten East Clinton and Clinton-Massie.
Region 16 also features area teams Fenwick, Milton-Union, Brookville and Middletown Madison among the top eight.
Trotwood-Madison (4-0) was the only other area team to be No. 1 (D-II, Region 8).
“We’re excited about where we’re at right now,” Rams coach Maurice Douglass said. “It’s just another phase.”
The top eight teams in each of the six divisions and 24 regions following the regular season qualify for the playoffs.
The highest ranked area D-I team is Troy, No. 8 in Region 3. Centerville, Wayne and Springfield, like Troy all D-I playoff teams last season, all are 1-3.
Vandalia Butler, Franklin and Tippecanoe join Trotwood as top-eight teams in Region 8. Alter is No. 4 in D-III, Region 12.
West Liberty-Salem (third) leads area D-V, Region 20 teams, and Springfield Catholic Central (third) is the best of several D-VI, Region 24 area teams.
Teams earn points for winning and second-level points for games their defeated opponents win.
