FAIRBORN — Kendrick Williams was fighting the flu on Friday, but the Fairborn quarterback never once considered staying home and missing out on a game with Stebbins.
He knows all too well what it’s like to be idle during football season and doesn’t want to experience that again.
The 6-foot, 190-pound junior said he cracked a bone in his throwing shoulder at Ohio State’s summer camp and wasn’t healthy enough to play in 2009.
The injury healed in time for basketball season — he led the GWOC in scoring — but the pain inside never went away.
“I didn’t even come to half the games — I couldn’t stand watching,” Williams said. “I didn’t have anybody to hang out with. All my friends played football.”
Williams is back on the field again, and opposing teams are now the ones finding the Skyhawks no fun to watch.
He completed 11-of-19 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown in a 34-14 win. He also rushed 12 times for 42 yards and another score, helping the Skyhawks to their first 2-0 start in six years.
“He runs our offense, he leads our offense,” coach Roy Thobe said. “Outside of his athletic ability — he’s a real good thrower and runner — he brings a calmness and confidence to the offense.”
The Indians (1-1) looked as if they would strike first after a 14-14 halftime tie, but QB Steve Smith (101 rushing yards on 16 carries) fumbled after reaching the Fairborn 8-yard line. Williams then punctuated a 14-play, 92-yard drive with a 1-yard score.
After another Smith fumble, Williams connected on a 73-yard TD pass to Devon Hamilton.
“That’s one thing you have to learn as a football player — know when the play is over,” Stebbins coach Trace Smitherman said of the fumbles. “That’s a large part of football, knowing when enough is enough. But you appreciate that effort as a coach.”
Winston Childers had 101 rushing yards and two TDs for the Skyhawks, who had plenty of penalty trouble. They were flagged 11 times for 114 yards, including four personal foul infractions.
