Overview: The Xenia Buccaneers finally put it all together in their Greater Western Ohio Conference South opener Friday night at Lebanon. Their defense stifled the Warriors, shutting them out in the second half and holding them to 118 yards. The offense mixed the run and the pass to spoil the Warriors’ homecoming with a 32-7 win. The Buccaneers got scoring runs of 10 and 80 yards from James Sanford in the second half to put the game away.

Turning point: After forcing Xenia into a fourth-and-20 from its 6-yard line midway through the third quarter, the Warriors botched the ensuing punt. Xenia’s Derek Hudson recovered the loose ball at the Warrior 41 and eight plays later, Buccaneer quarterback Zack Newsock bulled in from 1-yard to push the lead to 19-7.

Stat pack:  Xenia finished with 404 yards in total offense and 21 first downs. ... Sanford led the Buccaneers with 128 yards on 10 carries while Shane Jacobs added 73 yards on 12 carries. ... Newsock finished 9-of-17 for 144 yards and was 7-of-12 for 115 yards in the first half. ... Lebanon turned the ball over three times, all leading to Xenia scores. QB Luke Morgan was 7-of-23 for 138 yards, one touchdown and two picks.

Quote: “Our kids have played well like that in spurts, we just have not been able to put all four quarters together like we did tonight.” – Xenia coach Bob DeLong.

Up next: Xenia (2-4, 1-0) vs. Trotwood; Lebanon (3-3, 0-1) at Miamisburg.
