FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Dayton Gems fought their way to an early lead but were unable to stop the first-place Fort Wayne Komets from mounting a come-from-behind 3-1 victory Saturday night.
Charlie Townsend scored the Gems’ goal in a game that featured a round of fisticuffs between Dayton tough guy Robin Richards and Fort Wayne’s Brent Henley after two seconds had elapsed.
When play resumed, Townsend scooped up a centering pass through neutral ice to rush in for a breakaway goal, the first of the night.
The Komets snapped a 1-1 tie in the second period and went up by two goals late in the third.
Dayton, 2-6-1 this season against the Komets, fell to 15-20-8 overall.
