TROTWOOD — The Flint Generals are getting tired of seeing the gold and blue colors of the Dayton Gems. Dayton beat the visiting Generals 3-1 at Hara Arena Sunday, Nov. 22, in front of an announced crowd of 1,375.

The Gems are five-for-five against Flint so far this season, including two wins this weekend.

“I guess we have their number right now,” said Dayton head coach John Marks. “We’re a better skating and a faster team.

“That’s the difference.”

Newcomer Tim Hartung, who was signed Friday, scored the winner at 3:15 of the third period, his second goal in three games. The 25-year-old native of Apple Valley, Minn., caught the puck on his backhand and managed to lift it past Flint goaltender Rob Nolan.

Hartung had been out of hockey for about a month after getting cut from the ECHL’s Gwinnett Gladiators.

“I got a call from coach Marks and here I am,” said Hartung, who played his college hockey at Northern Michigan University. “It’s nice to find a place to play. The guys are great here.”

“He’s a nice player,” Marks said. “A smart player, who has hockey sense.”

Matt Auffrey’s power-play goal at 17:18 of the third iced it for the Gems. Rookie Jonathan Ornelas also scored for Dayton (7-6-3-0), while goalie Ryan Mior made 25 saves for his sixth win.

Ornelas got the Gems on the board at 2:01 of the second period when he found a loose puck to the right of Nolan and scored from just outside the Generals’ crease.

Nathan Oke and Mike Vaskivuo picked up assists on the goal, Ornelas’ fourth of the season.

Flint’s John Mori made it 1-1 at 9:23 of the second period on a backhander that went through traffic and in behind Mior.

“It was the third game in three nights, against a team that was fresh,” Marks said. “I thought our effort was good.”

So because it is $1 beer night this suddenly makes the Gems not family friendly? Give me a break. The crowd was fine and every minor league hockey team I have seen has $1 beer nights - Cincinnati runs the same promotion. How is $1 beer night any different than parents drinking in front of their kids at home where it is supposed to be a kid-friendly environment?
