DAYTON — Had Tommy Nurre been writing the script for his Dayton Dragons debut, he might have included a game-winning hit.

But this wasn’t bad.

On his first Midwest League swing Wednesday night, May 12, the former Miami University first baseman swatted a hanging change-up from Fort Wayne TinCaps starter Mike Watt for a second-inning home run to left field.

“It felt good just to contribute,” Nurre said after inspiring a 5-4 victory before a sellout crowd at Fifth Third Field. “It’s been a while since I played under the lights.”

Nurre, a 38th-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 2009, joined the Dragons on Tuesday, assigned here by the Reds from extended spring training in Arizona.

“This is kind of a dream come true,” the Cincinnati St. Xavier High School graduate said.

For the Dragons, 13-5 at home, sweeping the TinCaps dimmed the memory of last week’s 0-6 road trip. Now it’s back on the bus to Midland, Mich., for four games against the Great Lakes Loons.
