The field hockey team is on a roll at Miami University, and it doesn’t appear to be a fleeting trend.
The RedHawks have won five in a row and are 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference under sixth-year coach Jill Reeve.
Last year, the RedHawks went 14-7 overall, becoming the first squad in program history to post back-to-back seasons with 10 or more wins.
This year didn’t start so well for Miami, which lost three of its first four matches.
“We have a pretty young team, and incorporating that youth onto this team took a little longer,” Reeve said. “We were not playing very well together initially, but after a few contests they started to figure it out.”
The players don’t pull any punches in their relationships with each other, Reeve said, which is one thing which makes them so strong.
“They’re edgy. They’re really honest with each other,” she said. “Building that trust with each other, it’s an X-factor.”
Seniors Katie Brightwell, Mary Hull and Maggie Marcum, and junior Kate Snyder have been the big scorers for Miami, combining for 21 of the team’s 27 goals.
Two other key players, according to Reeve, have been sophomore sweeper Kylie Landeros and sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Huck.
Marcum was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 29, while Huck was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Two of the biggest obstacles to Miami winning a MAC championship, Reeve said, are Kent State and Ohio. Both will play in Oxford next weekend, KSU on Oct. 10 and Ohio the following day.
The RedHawks’ next contest is Friday at Ball State.
Coaches pick Camper
Miami junior forward Carter Camper is a unanimous selection on the All-Central Collegiate Hockey Association preseason first team in a vote of the league’s coaches.
Carter made the All-CCHA first team last season after leading the RedHawks with 20 goals and 42 points, and leading the conference with 12 power-play goals.
Teammate Chris Wideman, a sophomore defenseman, made preseason honorable mention.
Miami, ranked No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll and No. 2 by College Hockey News, plays its one exhibition game at 8:05 p.m. Saturday against Windsor at Steve Cady Arena.
The RedHawks open their regular season the following weekend, Oct. 9-10, at home against St. Cloud State.
Volleyball 2-0 in MAC
After an up-and-down start against nonleague competition, the volleyball team has won its first two MAC matches over Buffalo and Akron.
Senior Andrea Atteberry recorded the 4,000th assist of her career against Buffalo, then had her first triple-double (10 kills, 35 assists and 13 digs) against Akron.
Atteberry was named MAC East Division Offensive Player of the week, and teammate Maria Leahy was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Coach Carolyn Condit’s team hits the road Thursday at Bowling Green and Saturday at Northern Illinois.
