One of the younger Miami University football teams in recent memory — and it will get much younger — will wrap up its first spring season under head coach Mike Haywood today, April 18, with the annual Red & White Spring Game.
The contest, which has free admission, will begin at 1 p.m. at Yager Stadium and consist of four 15-minute quarters with a running clock and no timeouts until the final two minutes of each half.
The current roster of 82 players includes only 11 with senior eligibility.
When the 2009 recruits arrive at summer camp, the roster will expand to 105, and 69 of them will be true freshmen, redshirt freshmen or sophomores.
One would-be senior from last season’s squad who has left the program is defensive lineman Travis Craven, a starter who played in all 12 games in 2008 and recorded 19 tackles, including three for loss.
Miami will open its regular season Sept. 5 at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati against Kentucky. Miami’s summer camp will begin in August at a date to be announced.
The Spring Game is part of a busy day for Miami sports.
The other events scheduled are:
• Athletic equipment sale and auction, 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., reopens 45 minutes after the conclusion of the Spring Game and closes at 5 p.m., located in the Cradle of Coaches Plaza on the south end of Yager Stadium
• Men’s and women’s track and field, 10 a.m., the All-Ohio Championships, with alumni recognition at noon
• Softball, 4 p.m., Northern Illinois at Miami
• Women’s soccer, 4 p.m., Wright State at Miami
• Baseball, 6 p.m., Buffalo at Miami
