OXFORD — By slowing down and not getting ahead of himself, Miami University’s Nathan Sutherland has seen his golf game flash forward, soaring to a new level.

This season the junior from Wyomissing, Pa., has seen his scoring average per round drop from 75.0 to 72.9, he won his first collegiate title at the (Cincinnati) Bearcat Invitational by a whopping seven strokes, and today, May 20, he begins play in the NCAA West Regional Championship.

Sutherland, one of 45 individuals on nonqualifying teams to be selected for regional competition, became the first Miami golfer in nine years to advance to the NCAA postseason.

The West Regional will be held through Saturday at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. The top five teams from that regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the lowest-scoring individual not on one of those teams.

“I don’t think too much about it,” Sutherland said about the opportunity to play in the national tournament June 1-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn. “I’ll step onto the tee (this) morning and take it one shot at a time and do what I’ve done all year. Stay patient.”

Patience, he said, has been the main reason for the dramatic strides he has taken this year.

“I think I’m just getting a little smarter,” Sutherland said. “I don’t think I’m hitting the ball any better. I might be, but in the past, if you get a little bit behind you force it and dig yourself into a deep hole.

“This year I did a lot better job of being patient, of realizing it’s a long journey, a long battle,” he explained.

Sutherland is at his best when he places the ball on a tee.

“I’m a pretty solid driver,” he said. “I put the ball in play. Driving the ball well and hitting a lot of fairways is something I take pride in.”

No Miami golfer had qualified for the NCAA regionals since Lee Curry advanced in 2001.

The 54-hole tournament has a field of 13 teams plus 10 individuals.
