OXFORD — Miami University’s basketball team is losing one of its point guards.
Chris McHenry, a 5-foot-11 junior, has been granted a release to transfer from the university, Miami coach Charlie Coles confirmed Tuesday.
McHenry had transferred to Miami from Garden City (Kan.) Community College following the 2009-10 season and played in 31 games for the RedHawks last winter.
“We’ve got a point guard coming in, Brian Sullivan (of Upper Arlington High School), who I think is going to be a really, really good player,” Coles said, “and I’m sure that Chris in his senior year wants to make sure he plays a lot and I can’t blame him much.
“I think he saw the handwriting on the wall,” Coles said. “Chris is happy going somewhere else, and that’s a good thing.”
The RedHawks signed Sullivan to a national letter of intent in November, and their main point guard last season was true freshman Quinten Rollins, who starting 19 games.
McHenry, whose destination is not known, started 11 times, averaged 5.4 points per game and ranked third on the team in 3-point baskets made (40). He was tied for fourth in assists (46) and was fifth in steals (15). He shot 37.4 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from the 3-point arc.
McHenry scored a season-high 13 points in Miami’s 78-57 loss at Kent State on Jan. 23 and also had a career-high six assists in that game. He scored in double figures five times for the RedHawks.
McHenry played with three college teams over the last three years, starting at Howard in 2009.
Miami finished the season with a 16-16 record, 11-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The RedHawks lost to Rhode Island 76-59 in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational.
