OXFORD — After being overshadowed by some explosive passing from both sides for about 13 minutes, Miami University’s defense turned in a strong performance that reached its peak in Saturday’s 41-13 victory with a epic goal-line stand early in the fourth quarter.
On the first play of the final quarter, Buffalo’s Isaac Baugh recovered a fumble by Chrishawn Dupuy at the Miami 32 and started toward the goal line. It looked like a sure six.
Miami quarterback Zac Dysert, whose career statistics include 7,166 passing yards but not a single tackle, decided to give it a shot.
“I wasn’t sure I was going to get him,” Dysert said. “I just wanted to get in his way. I made a stab at him and got him.”
Got him, it turned out, inside the RedHawks’ 1-yard line.
Miami coach Don Treadwell was impressed. “They pick up our fumble and our quarterback gets him with a shoestring tackle before he gets to the end zone.”
Still, the Bulls had first-and-goal, and the end zone was mere inches away.
Branden Oliver got the hand-off. Evan Harris and Mike Kokal teamed for the tackle. No gain.
Second down. This time Buffalo quarterback Chazz Anderson kept it. He ran into Kokal and Jerrell Wedge. No gain.
Third down. Oliver tried another run. Austin Brown and Jason Semmes were waiting. No gain.
On fourth down Anderson tried to lob it. Nunley, a sophomore, likes it when that happens near him. He came up with the ninth interception of his Miami career.
“That was huge,” Treadwell said, of the stand, “and it’s something to build on.”
Great Scott: Miami true freshman wide receiver Dawan Scott became the fastest Miami player ever to record two games of 100 receiving yards. He did it in just eight contests. Scott had seven receptions for 140 yards last week and exceeded that Saturday with three catches for 141 yards.
Boucher makes early appearance: Sophomore quarterback Austin Boucher spelled Dysert during Miami’s first possession of the second quarter. “We wanted to get him in there and get his feet wet with the game still on the line,” said Treadwell, whose RedHawks led 21-13 when the Alter High School graduate came into the game.
