OXFORD — Miami University’s Courtney Osborn said her astonishing performance Wednesday night was a team effort, and she had the easy part.
The 5-foot-10 guard from Fishers, Ind., poured in 48 points in the RedHawks’ 95-85 overtime victory at Akron, which set not only the school record for most points in a game, but the Mid-American Conference record as well.
“I’m just proud to be able to represent Miami and my coaches and my teammates,” Osborn said Thursday. “They did all the dirty work. They gave me some great shots. All I had to do was hit some wide-open shots.”
She hit 14-of-25 shots from the floor, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, and drained 14-of-17 free-throw attempts.
Osborn was more impressed with the way the RedHawks bounced back from a 29-17 halftime deficit to win for the seventh straight time than she was with her own 48 points, 10 of which came in the overtime period of Miami’s Mid-American Conference opener.
“It was a great team win last night,” she said. “We battled back in the second half, and after they hit a 3-pointer to send it to overtime we still battled. There was never a doubt in our minds that we were going to win that game.
“This team is so special because we have so many people who can step up,” she added, noting that sophomore Hannah Robertson scored a career-high 17 points Wednesday and junior forward Kirsten Olowinski had 19 rebounds, also a career high.
Osborn said she felt nothing special during pregame warm-ups.
“It was just normal,” she said. “I was in a little bit of a slump, but the coaching staff has done a really good job of getting me more shots in practice and working with me on some little things, some feet stuff and balance.”
The RedHawks (11-3 overall) will try to make it eight in a row Saturday when they take on Buffalo (5-10, 0-1 MAC) at Millett Hall in the first game of a doubleheader. The women’s game starts at 4:30 p.m. The Miami men’s team will play Akron at 7.
