OXFORD — The Miami University hockey team sent their fans home happy Friday night, Oct. 9, at Steve Cady Arena.
The RedHawks, the top-ranked team in the nation in one poll, defeated No. 13 St. Cloud State 3-2 in overtime in the season opener for both teams.
Junior Carter Camper scored the game-winner just 1:52 into overtime to send the crowd of more than 3,000 into a frenzy. Camper corralled a rebound of a Tommy Wingels shot to beat Huskies goaltender Dan Dunn.
“I saw Wingels and (Justin) Vaive around the net and it was great that they were both there,” Camper said. “I figured it would just go in or go in off their stick. We were just lucky to get a goal there. It’s always good to get the first win under your belt and this definitely feels good.”
Sophomore goaltender Cody Reichard made 22 saves, including several from point-blank range early on, for the RedHawks.
St. Cloud State grabbed the early lead when sophomore Oliver Lauridsen scored at the 17:42 mark of the first period.
“We came out with a little bit more energy,” Miami coach Enrico Blasi said. “We had an opportunistic bounce on the first goal. We kind of started to roll a little bit and started to play our game.”
Freshman Curtis McKenzie laced a shot by Dunn to tie the game at 1-1. Andy Miele had the assist for Miami. From then on, the Red and White kept the tempo up.
Camper fed Pat Cannone for the RedHawks’ second goal of the game at the 8:36 mark of the second.
With 1:59 left in the game, junior Brian Volpei tight-roped through RedHawks defenders to tie up the game at 2-2.
“It was a big goal,” Volpei said. “It put us in a position to come away with a win. They just got the better of us at the end.”
The RedHawks face the Huskies again at 7:05 p.m. today at Steve Cady Arena.
