OXFORD — Coming off one of the more lackluster performances in recent memory, Miami University football coach Don Treadwell still has faith in his offense as the RedHawks prepare to face high-powered Toledo.
“It’s whether your glass is half full or half empty,” he said, “and life’s too short to sit around moping about what went wrong.”
The half-full glass is the fact that Miami did beat Kent State 9-3 for its second straight victory.
Call the pessimistic view half empty with a vengeance.
• The RedHawks had 166 total yards against the Golden Flashes, the first time they had been held under 200 since they managed just 188 in a 48-0 loss at Boise State in 2009.
• Miami has failed to score 10 points in three of its six games.
• The 41 net yards rushing dropped Miami’s national rank in rushing offense to last. The RedHawks are the only team with fewer than 400 rushing yards, and after 193 attempts they have yet to break a run as long as 25 yards.
Treadwell, staying true to the half-full side of the equation, pointed out that Miami’s offense did play better over the final 30 minutes. The RedHawks had 56 total yards in the first half, 110 in the second.
“We came out and put more drives together,” he said. “We just didn’t finish them.”
On the half-empty side, Nick Harwell in his previous four games racked up 162, 139, 149 and 186 receiving yards. At Kent State? Three catches, 1 yard.
“They did double him, which was smart,” Treadwell said.
“Because of their defense and all of their blitzing we didn’t have the time to stand in there (and look for an open receiver),” he added. “Their defense was getting after us.”
