RedHawks Brightwell and Huck win MAC Player of the Week awards

CLEVELAND – A pair of Miami field hockey athletes won awards from the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Senior back Katie Brightwell was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Abbey Huck was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first weekly honor for both players.

Brightwell was the leading scorer for Miami with 11 points on three goals and five assists during the week as the RedHawks won games over Ball State, William & Mary and Richmond.

Huck allowed only three goals in 272 minutes and 5 seconds of action for a goals-against average of 0.99. She recorded 15 saves, and recorded a saves percentage of .833 during the week. Miami returns to action Friday, Sept. 25, when they host Indiana for a 5 p.m. game at the Miami Field Hockey Complex.

Burress gets two years in prison

NEW YORK — Former Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress has been sentenced to two years in prison after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh at a nightclub and later reaching a plea deal on weapons charges.

The former New York Giants wide receiver was sentenced Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Manhattan’s state Supreme Court. He will be supervised for two years after his release.

Burress pleaded guilty last month to attempted criminal possession of a weapon. He expects to begin serving time immediately and says he hopes to return to football.

Burress was at a New York City nightclub last November when a gun tucked into his waistband slipped down his leg and fired.

Henin will return to tennis in 2010

BRUSSELS — Justine Henin will return to competitive tennis next year.

The former top-ranked player made the announcement Tuesday, Sept. 22, barely a week after fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters capped her comeback from retirement by winning the U.S. Open.

“I want to come back in January,” she said live on Belgian TV.

Henin retired just over a year ago. But the 27-year-old she said she’s ready to compete for an eighth Grand Slam title.
