AKRON — Courtney Osborn erupted for a Mid-American Conference single-game record of 48 points Wednesday night to lead the Miami University women’s basketball team to a 95-85 overtime victory over Akron.
The RedHawks (11-3 overall) stretched their winning streak to seven games despite scoring just 17 first-half points in their MAC opener.
Miami rallied with a 57-point onslaught in the second half, and although the Zips tied the score with a 3-point basket at the buzzer at the end of the second half, the RedHawks poured in 21 points in the overtime period, including 10 by Osborn.
Miami’s 5-foot-10 junior guard connected on 14-of-25 field goal attempts, 6-of-8 shots from the 3-point arc and 14-of-17 free throws. She also broke the Miami record set by Amanda Jackson, who scored 43 on Dec. 29, 2007. The MAC record had been held by Kent State’s Lindsay Shearer, who had 44 on March 12, 2005.
Hannah Robertson added a career-high 17 points for Miami, and Kirsten Olowinski recorded her 24th career double-double with 10 points and 19 rebounds.
The RedHawks will return home to play at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against Buffalo in the first game of a women’s-men’s doubleheader. The Miami men face Akron at 7.
