OXFORD — Jarod Palmer, having just played his final regular-season home game for Miami University’s hockey team, explained why the RedHawks are so dangerous.
“A big part of our offense is the depth we have,” Palmer said after Miami erupted for six goals in a span of 13 minutes, 14 seconds in the second period against Ohio State. “Everybody from the defense to forwards contributed. Once we get going, it’s hard to stop us.”
Palmer had one goal and one assist in Miami’s 6-2 victory over the Buckeyes on Friday night, Feb. 26, at Steve Cady Arena.
That gives the senior from Fridley, Minn., 40 points this season, which leads the team, and 132 career points, which ties Nathan Davis for 12th on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Palmer wasn’t alone in Miami’s scoring column Friday.
Five other RedHawks had goals, including sophomore Trent Vogelhuber, whose goal 3:53 into the second period put Miami ahead for good 2-1.
Andy Miele had started the onslaught with an unassisted goal 1:21 into the period. OSU’s Sergio Somma answered with a goal, but Vogelhuber answered that one 25 seconds later.
And then Miami’s rapid-fire offense kept pouring it on. Justin Vaive buried the puck 9:01 into the period, followed by Tommy Wingels at 11:14, Palmer at 14:18 and Vincent LoVerde at 14:35. Reilly Smith had two assists in 17 seconds.
“For us to be successful, everybody’s contributing, whether it’s Miele’s line, (Carter) Camper’s line or (Pat) Cannone’s line,” said coach Enrico Blasi, whose second-ranked RedHawks improved to 24-5-6 overall and 21-2-4-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Miami sophomore goaltender Cody Reichard tied a career high with 33 saves, which was a big reason neither team scored in the first period despite 14 shots on goal by the Buckeyes (12-16-5, 10-12-5-3 CCHA).
“They came out hard in the first period like we knew they were going to,” Vogelhuber said of the Buckeyes, “and we sort of weathered the storm.
“We didn’t get a whole lot of shots in the first period,” he added. “Once the first one went (in), I think their goalie lost a lot of confidence. ... We just sort of took over.”
