OXFORD — The numbers continue to mount for the No. 1-ranked Miami University hockey team and it’s No. 1 offensive line of Carter Camper, Andy Miele and Reilly Smith.
The trio accounted for three more goals on Friday night as the RedHawks beat the Lake Superior State Lakers 6-2 at Steve Cady Arena.
Miele scored a goal and had three assists for Miami (5-1-1, 3-0-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association). Camper and Smith both added a goal and two assists.
“It’s pretty easy (to score) when you play with these two guys,” Smith said of Camper, Miami’s senior captain, and Miele, senior assistant captain. Smith added that as long as he plays hard and gets to the right spots, “they’ll get me the puck.”
“Me and Reilly played together last year (on the same line) and we have a connection most guys don’t have,” Miele noted, “and when they added Carter to the line, it really clicked.”
Just seven games into the season, Miele, Camper and Smith already have accounted for 18 goals and 27 assists.
“When you put three good players together, they’re going to create opportunities,” Miami coach Enrico Blasi said.
Defenseman Steven Spinell and forwards Alden Hirschfeld and Curtis McKenzie each added a goal for the RedHawks. Pat Cannone had two assists, Cameron Schilling had one and Cody Reichard stopped 16-of-18 shots.
The Lakers, who trailed 5-0 after two periods, outscored the RedHawks 2-1 and out-shot them 7-2 in the third period as Miami was saddled with five penalties.
“For two periods we played pretty solid,” Blasi said. “They took it to us in the third period with our penalty trouble.”
Miami and Lake Superior State return to action at Steve Cady Arena tonight, starting at 7:05.
Weber update
Miami junior defenseman Will Weber, who was rushed to surgery last Saturday after his neck was lacerated by the skate of an opposing player, had the 15 staples from his neck removed on Friday.
According to Miami spokesman Michael Weismann, Weber said the doctor told him he probably would be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. Weber, whose own timetable is as aggressive as his style of play, wants to be back for the Alaska home series Nov. 12-13.
