Krista Pace, a senior from Toronto, Ontario, has set a new career record for Miami University women’s soccer.

Pace, the RedHawks’ goalkeeper, recorded her 11th shutout on Friday, Oct. 2, when Miami beat Toledo 1-0. The old record of 10 was set by Katie Karlander in 2002.

“Yes, it’s great to have the record,” Pace said. “At the same time, I don’t get many shots taken at me, so there isn’t much to do,” she added, giving much of the credit to her teammates on defense.

“I’ve had my moments, and I’ve certainly had a few mistakes,” Pace said. “I’ve just tried to be consistent.”

The RedHawks have not allowed more than one goal in any of their first 11 games this season. Three of those games have been shutouts.

Miami (6-4-1, 2-1-1 MAC) already has equaled its victory total from each of the last two seasons.

“I think we absolutely have a chance to win the MAC, more than a good chance,” Pace said. “If we can stay focused, we’re going to win the MAC.”

Miami’s most recent victory was 4-1 over Bowling Green on Saturday. The RedHawks had not beaten the Falcons since 2002.

Pace and her teammates face a long road trip this weekend at Eastern Michigan (Friday) and Central Michigan (Sunday).

Runners sweep honors

It was a big weekend for Miami cross country as a pair of seniors swept the MAC Runner of the Week awards.

Kevin Silver was the runner-up out of 408 competitors at the 8K Sean Earl Loyola (Chicago) Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 3. He led the RedHawks men to the championship in the 39-team event.

Kelsey McHugh placed ninth for the Miami women, who finished second at the 5K All-Ohio Championship in Delaware on Friday.

Both teams are off until Oct. 17, when they run in the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.

Sutherland ties for 5th

Junior Nathan Sutherland had the highest finish of any Miami golfer this year when he rebounded from a slow start (2 over par after his first five holes) to tie for fifth place at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.

He shot an even-par 70 on the final round Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Warren Golf Course, which is located on the Notre Dame campus.

The RedHawks, 14th in the team standings, will play in the Bearcat Invitational in Hebron, Ky. on Oct. 12-13.
